💡 Key rule: withdrawals add back to your room
When you withdraw from your TFSA, that amount is added back to your contribution room — but not until January 1st of the following year. So if you withdraw $10,000 in October 2026, you can re-contribute that $10,000 starting January 1, 2027 (plus the new annual limit).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the TFSA limit for 2026?
The 2026 TFSA annual contribution limit is $7,000. If you have been eligible since 2009 and have never contributed, your cumulative room as of January 1, 2026 is $102,000. Room accumulates from the later of 2009 or the year you turned 18.
How do I find my exact TFSA room?
The most accurate source is CRA My Account at canada.ca. Your TFSA room is updated every year and reflects your actual contributions and withdrawals. Our calculator gives a close estimate based on your birth year, but CRA My Account has the exact number. Note that contributions made in the current year may take time to appear.
Can I contribute more than the annual limit if I have unused room?
Yes — unused room from prior years carries forward indefinitely. If you contributed nothing in 2024 and 2025, you have an extra $14,000 in room on top of the 2026 annual limit. The calculator above shows your total cumulative room including carryforward.
What happens if I over-contribute to my TFSA?
Over-contributions are penalized at 1% per month on the excess amount until it's removed. This can add up quickly. Always verify your room in CRA My Account before making a large contribution, especially if you've made withdrawals in the current calendar year that haven't yet added back.
Does TFSA room accumulate while I'm outside Canada?
No. TFSA contribution room only accumulates while you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes. If you became a non-resident, your room stopped accumulating during that period. Contributions made while a non-resident are subject to a 1% monthly tax on the over-contributed amount.
